Update: Pictures added
Cape Town - The former home of swimming legend Ryk Neethling has stolen the limelight from some of the best residential properties in the world at a top international property awards ceremony in Dubai.
The Polo House, part of the Val de Vie Estate in the Paarl-Franschhoek region, was crowned with the Best Single Unit Residential Development Award. It competed against a number of residential property developments in the African and Arabian regions.
The spectacular property was also chosen as top-scoring regional winner in its category and will go on to compete in London at the global competition against the best of Europe, the UK, the Americas and Asia to find the ultimate World’s Best in each category.
The 600 m² property was developed by Guardian Project Management, in which Neethling is a shareholder.
Last year, Neethling sold the house to a foreign buyer at a record R22 500 per m². However, he still resides on the estate.
The Polo House, which towers before the vast green of top class polo fields, was chosen for its unique design and location.

According to Guardian Project Management, the Polo House's prime location and spectacular views helped increase the market value of the properties as well as building activity on the estate.
The estate itself, which won the award for Best Multiple Unit and Mixed Use Development in 2012/13, was also nominated at this year’s International Property Awards. Val de Vie Estate is regarded as an international polo destination and annually hosts prestigious internationals and high society events.
