ADVERTORIAL
As a leader in developing smart supply chain solutions in Southern Africa, Barloworld Logistics has embarked upon an important initiative to attract and convert product to rail and away from road. Recently, the logistics provider announced that it had reached the 100 000 tonne mark with regards to converting road traffic to rail. This milestone follows the revitalization of Transnet’s Elandsfontein Intermodal Terminal. In December 2016, a locomotive from Newcastle carrying ArcelorMittal South Africa (AMSA) steel arrived at the terminal – marking the first usage of the terminal and warehouse facility in 15 years for steel related products. The key project stakeholders - Barloworld Logistics, Transnet Freight Rail (TFR), AMSA and Newlyn Properties - celebrated the landmark delivery of 14 wagons of AMSA steel.
The revitalization of the Elandsfontein Intermodal Terminal is a significant step forward in placing South African freight back onto our national rail network. The project is also testament to the power of collaboration. The 100,000 tonne milestone is tangible proof of the concept and provides real metrics with regards to the positive environmental impact and reduction of truck trips that such a solution offers a client - as well as the greater supply chain industry.
