Eskom announced via social media networking site Twitter on Friday evening that stage one loadshedding would end at 23:00 in the evening and that an unspecified category of loadshedding would resume on Saturday morning.

Eskom announced this on the same evening that Eskom chair Jabu Mabuza's resignation from the troubled utility was also announced.

South Africa has been subjected to stages one and two of loadshedding for each day of the past week.

The statement said while Eskom would implement loadshedding on Saturday morning, its severity would depend on how successful the utility's team is at restoring capacity on Friday evening.

"The extent of the Saturday loadshedding will depend on how well the system performs overnight and will be communicated tomorrow morning at 08:00," the statement.

The statement said because of inadequate maintenance over many years, the system remained vulnerable to unplanned outages of 12 738MW from 18:30 on Friday evening.

The statement said while teams were working around the clock to ensure no further units were lost, loadshedding could not be avoided on Friday evening.
