Lenasia UIF office set to re-open

There is no need to panic over the closure of the Lenasia civic centre, says the provincial department of labour, following a complaint by a Fin24 user.

Michelle P wrote that the UIF office was shut without any warning and workers failed to turn up two weeks in a row.

She wanted to know where Lenasia residents should submit their forms now because "people depend on this income to feed their families and pay their bills".

"This is unacceptable as people are waiting from early parts of the morning.

"(Last Wednesday), between 06:00-07:00 there were 30 people waiting at the gate and after 09:00 there were over 200 people waiting.

"No notice was given and when security guards advised UIF workers are on strike, we called the UIF office in Pretoria.

"They advised that no strike action was in place. There is no warning on the news regarding a strike by UIF workers."

The Gauteng department of labour's chief director Kenny Fick told Fin24 that the Lenasia office had been closed only during the week of November 4 to 8.

"The reason for the closure is that our Johannesburg office has been closed for health and safety reasons.

"This resulted in all equipment and resources being locked in the building and we experienced some challenges in retrieving it.

"We have placed notices at the Johannesburg offices and also informed the media through a media statement on the internet," he said.

The Lenasia office as well as all other satellite offices will re-open this week.

Fick apologised for the inconvenience, saying "this was beyond our control".

Gauteng department of labour's communications manager sent the media release on request to Fin24.

"Temporary closure of Johannesburg Labour Centre in Small Street

"The Department of Labour regrets the temporary closure of Johannesburg Labour Centre in Small Street today Thursday October 31 due to Health and Safety Issues.

"We remain committed to serving our clients thus we are redirecting them to the following Centres: Alberton, Roodepoort, Germiston, Sandton, Randburg, Roodepoort and Orlando west Labour Centres where services will be provided.
