Fin24 has been inundated with responses from users who have received
emails from 'Sars scamsters', who send notifications of fake refunds to
lay their hands on people's banking details.
Fin24 user Marco tells how quick thinking by First National Bank saved his wife from financial loss. He writes:
My wife would have been caught out by these scamsters, if it wasn't for the fast action of FNB.
She received an email, thought to be from the South African Revenue Service (Sars), saying that there is a refund of R4 609. She clicked on a link and it took her to another page where all the SA bank logos were found.
She clicked on the FNB login and proceeded to enter her login detail; she immediately received an SMS with her OTP for the creation of a secondary user called "tax refund payment".
Five minutes later she received a call from someone claiming to be from Sars and requesting the OTP she had just received. She then gave it to them.
Lucky for us, FNB picked up on this and froze my wife's account, and when she tried logging in on her account it was blocked.
She called them and they notified her that she had been scammed. Luckily no money was lost.
