Fin24 user Angela September was one of many to respond to a
report on Tuesday that Media24 CEO Esmaré Weideman lost R360 000 over the
weekend in what appears to be a hit from a SIM-swap syndicate. She writes:
I read the story of Media 24's CEO being scammed by the bank! My symphathy to her.....not at all nice.
Well......I had a very small amount taken but the moral of the story is the same! I was withdrawing at the ATM - Main Branch of Standard Bank in Pinetown (KZN); the ATM is situated right outside the bank.
I punched in R1 500 and then the beep came to my phone showing I had withdrawn R2 500 but at the CHATSWORTH branch which is about 45 minutes away from Pinetown.
Anyway, I waited and waited for the money to come out or the slip..........nothing! I stood for a few minutes - and of course there was no one around or close to me - so I went into the bank and laid my complaint. All they said is that I must fill in a fraud claim - cancelled the old card and issued me with a new one! How crazy is that!
Well - I heard from a very reliable source that it is an inside job!
