Working in Saudi, do I also pay tax in SA?

Jul 02 2015 03:04

Cape Town - Tax filing season for the period March 1 2014 to February 2015 has just kicked off and filing returns can sometimes be a daunting task.

Fin24, in collaboration with the SA Institute of Tax Professionals (SAIT), will as far as possible answer users' tax questions to help make this process as seamless as possible.

A Fin24 user currently working in Saudi Arabia wants to know whether she should pay tax in South Africa as well.

Piet Nel, SA Institute of Tax Professionals responds:

We accept that you are a South African tax resident temporarily working in Saudia Arabia. You will then still have to declare and possibly pay tax in the RSA on all your income.

The remuneration earned outside South Africa may qualify for an exemption from normal tax.

This would apply if you have been outside South Africa for a period or periods exceeding 183 full days in aggregate during any 12 month period and for a continuous period exceed 60 full days and the services (in respect of which the remuneration was derived) were rendered during that period.
