A Fin24 user wants to know if the financial support he gives to his mother-in-law is tax deductible. He writes:
My mother-in-law has very little income. I give her R2 000 per month from my salary (after tax).
Can I deduct it on my tax return? She of course is not my direct family.
Marc Sevitz of TaxTim responds:
Unfortunately not. This is a personal expense, which cannot be deducted for tax purposes.
Although it is for "charitable" purposes, it is still not permissible.
