I have inherited an oil painting from my deceased mother. The artist is George Enslin and it was painted in 1959.
Should I regard this painting as an investment, or just as something of sentimental value to myself?
If it could be regarded as an investment, could you give me an estimation of what the value could be?
It shows the old District Six and is approximately 95 x 95 mm.
Gary Shean, head of the painting departement at Stephan Welz & Co. in Cape Town, responds.
George Enslin, a Cape Town artist, painted a large number of Cape scenes – with District Six being a popular subject matter.
When we are dealing with Enslin, the condition of the work is very important, as a number of his canvases show distress.
This is because of poor preparation of the canvas before painting the work.
I would suggest an auction estimate of R20 000 – R30 000.
