Johannesburg - The rand remained on the back foot at midday on Friday‚ amid quiet trade and taking a breather after a very volatile week.
“The rand is very quiet today after a very volatile week. London and New York are having holidays on Monday‚ which is also contributing to the quiet market. There are no major headlines to driving the currency so the rand is just taking a breather‚” a local currency trader said.
At 11:43 the rand was bid at R9.5596/$ from R9.5176 at Thursday’s close and R9.5674 at Wednesday’s close. It touched a four-year worst level of R9.6920/$ on Thursday.
The local currency was bid at R12.3800/€ from its previous close of R12.3238 and was at R14.4308 against sterling from R14.3744 at its previous close.
The euro was bid at $1.2958 from its previous close of $1.2931.
