Johannesburg - Government bonds weakened sharply on Tuesday, hit by a sell-off in emerging markets and by investors switching from expectations of a domestic rate cut to an increase some time this year.
The yield for the 2026 paper, which the secondary market uses as a benchmark, surged 31 basis points to 8.575% while the shorter-dated 2015 paper jumped 23 basis points to 6.54%.
