Do you need a BOS?

Cape Town – Do you have a business card on steroids (BOS for short)? And if not, why on earth should you have one?

One of our expert advisers on entrepreneurship and an avid blogger on entrepreneur issues, Bertie du Plessis, says you do.

If you answer “yes” to the following questions, a business card on steroids may work for you. As a matter of fact, it may work very, very well for you.

Here are the questions: are you self-employed? Are you a small business owner, consultant,  speaker, trainer or coach? Do you live by marketing your expertise?

If so, you can really benefit from a BOS.

A BOS is a little pocket book, A6 in size (about the size of one-and-a-half iPhone 5s and between 2 500 and 5 000 words in length in 12pt Times Roman). Constraints? You must be able to read it cover to cover in no more than 15 minutes.

Says Du Plessis: “This is unobtrusive marketing at its best and you will get much more mileage from this than from almost any other form of ‘What I can do!’ egocentric material.

“What else can you produce in a couple of weeks’ time that will cost you as little as R35, but that has an enduring influence and have you remembered as somebody that adds value, rather than begs business?”

Much better than a brochure and more personal than a business card, the BOS doesn’t shout your own praises (how boring); rather it already does something positive for the acquaintance or client because it offers useful knowledge.

Du Plessis has now written a book with step by step instructions on how to find your own voice as a BOS writer, how to select a topic, how to write in the minimum of time and finally how to self-publish easily.
