A Fin24 user wants to know how to build a successful business in the construction sector. He writes:
I have registered a construction company that I am struggling to get off the ground due to lack of projects.
I have been in the property business for more than 10 years, involved in property development and home construction on my small projects.
My aim is to be involved in bigger projects in general construction, low cost housing and infrastructure development. I need mentorship in running the business, particularly the property development aspect of the business, how to connect with the land owners for my company to participate in their projects.
Will you kindly assist me with how I can get started and create jobs?
Independent business consultant Anton Ressel responds:
You have chosen a very competitive and congested industry to try and break into, but your experience should stand you in good stead.
If you are looking for mentorship, you should consider applying for a programme like Legends, funded by Old Mutual and managed by Fetola, or the SAB Kickstart Programme. Both offer business support and mentorship to successful participants.
You might also consider approaching some of the established construction companies and inquire whether they run any supplier development programmes.
Many of them do as part of their BB-BEE scorecard contributions.
