Cape Town - A film on which local animation studio Triggerfish did some work, has been nominated for an Oscar.
Revolting Rhymes is one of five finalists in the category "best animated short film".
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Western Cape Minister of Economic Opportunities Alan Winde has congratulated Triggerfish for what he calls their "superb work" on the Oscar nominated film.
Triggerfish is based in Bergvliet, Cape Town and worked on the project with international producers Magic Light Pictures.
The film, based on the Roald Dahl book of the same name, has already won numerous other awards, including the Cristal at the animation industry’s flagship festival held in Annecy, France.
It is also nominated for other awards, including the Annie Awards, which take place in February, a British Animation award and the International Emmy Kids Awards, which take place in April.
“The very talented team at Triggerfish is a leading light in the animation industry in Africa. Their work has put animation in our province on the global map and we are extremely proud of all they have done to promote our creative industries," said Winde.
"They are now rightfully being recognised for their talent and passion on film-making’s most prestigious stage, and I wish them all the best for the awards ceremony.”
Wesgro CEO Tim Harris said this achievement will help put Cape animation on the world map.
“We have some of the most talented animators in the world located in Cape Town and the Western Cape, and this nomination confirms it. Regardless of the outcome of the results evening, Triggerfish is already a winner, and is helping boost the brand of our film and media sector. We are extremely excited about this nomination, and we wish Triggerfish and ‘Revolting Rhymes’ the best of luck,” said Harris.
