Cape Town - President Jacob Zuma on Monday appointed two commissioners to take over the leadership of the Financial and Fiscal Commission (FFC).
FFC commissioners Professor Daniel Plaatjies and Dr Sibongile Muthwa were appointed as chairperson and deputy chairperson respectively.
Bongani Khumalo’s term as deputy chairperson, acting chairperson and chief executive officer ended on August 31 2016, Treasury said last year.
His contract was not extended after the FFC and Treasury in September 2016 appointed a firm to investigate allegations of impropriety concerning actions of FFC staff members, Treasury said in a statement last year.
Velile Mbethe is the acting CEO while the process for filling the position is being finalised.
Plaatjies has been a part-time commissioner of the FFC since September 2013 and was deputy director general of Strategy and Business Development at the South African Social Security Agency. He also held the position of director for public finances at National Treasury. He is the former director of the Wits School of Governance.
Muthwa has been a part-time commissioner of the FFC since July 2014 and is the deputy vice-chancellor of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. She was director general of the Eastern Cape Provincial Government.
“Their institutional memory and expertise as well as their experience as serving members of the FFC will add enormous value to the commission,” Zuma said in a statement.
The commission's primary objective is to make recommendations to Parliament, the provincial legislatures, local government and other organs of state on financial and fiscal matters as envisaged in the Constitution and other national legislation.
Zuma congratulated Plaatjies and Muthwa and wished them well in their new responsibilities.
