Wows and vivas: Mboweni’s 'derby day' at the polls

A national football derby game between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates is not something one considers when thinking of voting in a general election.

Unless the voter in question is Minister of Finance Tito Mboweni. Mboweni cast a national and provincial ballot at Johannesburg’s Killarney Country Club in Gauteng - and expressed his excitement by comparing "democracy in action" to "derby day".

Mboweni, known for his straightforward demeanor and habit of speaking off the cuff, took to Twitter to share his elation on Election Day.

"The democratic voting queue at the Killarney Country Club, Johannesburg. Peaceful, friendly and exciting. Democracy in action. Its is like derby day indeed," Mboweni gushed.

His tweets included selfies with other voters, pictures of the winding queue at his voting station and a smiling pose next to the national and provincial ballot (unmarked - for scale, of course).

But no social media Election Day post is complete without a thumb picture, and Mboweni tweeted his, captioning it: "Done! This is like derby day! So exciting. Viva Democracy!"

If Mboweni thought the election was exciting, we recommend he stays on as finance minister if the African National Congress wins – as steering SA’s economic turnaround is bound to be a roller coaster ride.
