Cape Town - National Treasury has suspended an employee of one of its service providers for seeking a R150 bribe at its Pretoria Office.
“The implicated individual is employed by a service provider for the National Treasury that is contracted to manage and run the Gauteng walk-in centre of the Central Supplier Database (CSD). The individual has since been suspended,” said Treasury in a media statement on Thursday evening.
“The National Treasury and the service provider have taken the necessary steps to ensure that the individual is prohibited from ever working for the CSD [again].”
Treasury spokesperson Mayihlome Tshwete was alerted to the alleged bribe via a social media post on Wednesday.
In the post a woman said she had gone to the Pretoria offices of National Treasury to complete a submission, but the computers were offline.
“But I had my laptop and Wi-Fi so I asked if they could show me what to do,” she wrote.
The employee, who has not been named, then asked her for R300. She gave him R150, what she had on her at the time.
“[I] am just so disappointed because they are hired to help us,” she wrote.
Treasury said it would support an investigation by the contractor, and would “welcome a dismissal if any wrongdoing is found on their part”.
