Unions hold the cards as Eskom faces fresh strike threat
Eskom has accused the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) of stalling and condoning ill-discipline among their ranks, as tension remains over potential discipline of members who participated in an illegal strike.
The two unions are yet to sign the latest wage offer of a 7.5% increase for 2018 and a 7% increase for the next two years. Solidarity has accepted the offer.
Rand hit hard as traders brace for more Turkish turmoil
The meltdown in the Turkish lira is finding its way into other markets with traders positioning for more turmoil for the rand.
Bloomberg Economics’ emerging-market vulnerability scorecard shows Argentina, Colombia, Mexico and South Africa join Turkey as the weakest links. But with Argentina and Mexico offering higher-than-average risk-adjusted returns, it leaves South Africa and Colombia as the most likely candidates for contagion from Turkey.
Engineering body CEO commits to diversity training over 'antagonistic' column
The CEO of the SA Institution of Civil Engineering (SAICE), Manglin Pillay, has apologised "unreservedly" for his article "Out on a rib" in the institution's official magazine which questioned the place of women in the engineering field.
He said he would also undergo diversity training.
Cosatu threatens ANC over alleged government job cuts plan
The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) has given government an ultimatum to stop discussing the fate of public servants unilaterally or risk losing the ANC-allied labour federation’s support at next year’s general election.
"We dismiss this and our latest talks with government were to discuss the conditions of workers and not cutting any stuff. So far, we are just reading papers and listening on the radio and we are as confused as the next person. Our position is that we don’t understand what is being said, but we are opposed to it as it has been reported," said Cosatu's national spokesperson Sizwe Pamla.
Gautrain announces when full service will return
The United National Transport Union (UNTU) has agreed to a wage deal with the Gautrain operator, which will end the two-week long strike.
The agreement will also see all employees who were earning below R8 500 a month, such as conductors, receive the figure as a basic salary.
