REVEALED: The highest paying jobs in SA

Johannesburg – Those working in information communication and technology (ICT) scoop the biggest pay, according to a salary review by CareerJunction.

The June 2017 salary review considers salary information across 10 different sectors and different regions, advertised on the CareerJunction website. The review was conducted for the period between October 2016 and March 2017.

The salary ranges are based on actual salary offerings for intermediate and senior level candidates. The salary ranges represent monthly “cost to company” remuneration and serve as an indication of the average salary offerings for each occupation, the report stated.

The ICT sector is one of the top paying sectors, given the high demand for these professionals, the report said.

IT middle management earns between R48 253 and R58 113, while senior management earns between R45 905 and R58 337.

The average pay for intermediate positions is at R35 218, with those in technical and business architecture earning the most in this sub-category with salaries between R49 429 and R53 389.

The average pay for senior positions is at R45 136. Those in technical and business architecture earn the most in this sub-category, between R57 284 and R66 558.

The architecture and engineering sector, is also one of the highest paying sectors in the South African job market, according to the report. Demand for these professionals is highest in Gauteng, and they are also the highest earners in the sector.

The average pay for intermediate positions is at R34 735, with mechanical engineers taking the highest pay in this sub-category between R 36 576 and R48 021.

The average pay of senior positions is at R48 901. Structural or civil engineers bag the highest pay in this sub-category between R 46 738 and R70 301.

There is low market demand for senior chemical engineers, the review indicated.

This is followed by the building and construction sector, the average pay of those in intermediate positions is at R30 897. The average pay of senior positions is at R43 726. Workers in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal are better earners than those in the Western Cape. There has been a notable increase in salaries for quantity surveyors, between 14% and 35%, the report said.

Financial professionals are among the highest earners in South Africa, this is particularly true for those living in Gauteng. The average pay of intermediary workers in the financial sector is R30 655, while that of senior workers is R38 700. Salaries have increased more than 20% for financial managers, the report said.

As for medical workers, the average pay of those in intermediary positions is R25 890. General practitioners earn the most between R32 500 and R45 519. Workers in senior positions earn an average of R40 087. Senior general practitioners earn the most between R47 591 and R60 998.Those in hospital management earn between R40 619 and R61 195.

Medical staff in Gauteng earn higher salaries than those in the Western Cape, according to the report.

The warehouse and logistics sector is one of the lowest paying sectors. Salary offerings have reduced from the previous year, except for jobs in distribution or courier services and logistics management where there have been increases. The average pay of workers in intermediate positions is R14 618. The average pay of workers in senior management positions is R26 274.

Workers in Gauteng are the highest earners, followed by Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.

The average salary of those in intermediary positions in marketing is R20 922, and that of senior positions is R32 477. The highest earners reside in Gauteng where the bulk of recruitment takes place.

Those in sales earn an average of R14 933 if they are in intermediary positions and R21 097 if they are in senior positions. Gauteng and Western Cape both have a “prominent” sales industry and workers earn higher incomes than those in other provinces. Salaries of travel agents, telesales, telemarketing and consultants have gained salary increases year-on-year.

Those in the manufacturing and assembly sector earn an average of R18 841, for intermediary positions and R26 879, for senior positions.

Those in admin and office support face a lot of competition due to the oversupply of workers. Salary offerings do not reflect notable increases year-on-year, according to the report. The average salary ranges from R13 055 to R18 335.
