PSA joins the chorus condemning Mabuza’s appointment at Eskom

The Public Servants Association on Wednesday joined the chorus of condemnation against Eskom chair Jabu Mabuza's appointment as interim Eskom CEO.

This after the Economic Freedom Fighters and the Institute of Directors of Southern Africa raised concern that one person holding both positions falls short of governance standards. The ANC NEC has also since said it would raise its concerns over Mabuza's dual role with Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan, who made the appointment. The PSA represents Eskom employees.

The statement said while the appointment was not illegal, it shows a lack of good cooperative governance at the already beleaguered power utility.

"The PSA pointed out that failures at the utility are a direct result of poor cooperate governance and this move to appoint Mr Mabuza ... continues to bleed billions in losses, shows the lack of ethics in government administration," the statement said.

The PSA said it was not convinced that Grodhan could not find any candidates as qualified as Mabuza, suggesting that the minister was overextending his powers.

"Following these disastrous losses and continuous bailouts by over-burdened taxpayers, it would be expected that the entire board and senior management be replaced, not that Mr Mabuza be given additional powers," the statement said.

The PSA also echoed the EFF's misgivings, saying they saw little reason to believe that Mabuza's position at Eskom was doing the ailing entity any good.
