Proudly SA CEO Leslie Sedibe to step down

Cape Town - Proudly South African CEO Leslie Sedibe will leave when his five-year contract ends in August, said the organisation in a statement on Tuesday.

“It has been a privilege to lead an organisation and movement that is at the core of what every South African can do to reduce the unacceptably high levels of poverty and contribute to the socio-economic welfare of our fellow countrymen and women,” said Sedibe.

"While we have been able to celebrate many highlights and major achievements along the way, Proudly SA has also managed to overcome many challenges and has grown in strength and stature."

Sedibe, who is an admitted Advocate of the High Court of South Africa, said he looks forward to pursuing other interests and opportunities in the private sector including his PhD studies.

The board of Proudly SA thanked Sedibe for leading the organisation in the last 5 years.

The process to recruit a new CEO of Proudly SA will be announced in the coming weeks.

In June News24 reported that the board decided not to renew Sedibe's contract.

According to the board's resolution which was taken on June 10 in Rosebank, it decided not to renew Sedibe's contract and that the position should be advertised internally and externally for a suitable candidate.

Prior to joining Proudly SA, Sedibe served as head of legal for the 2010 South African FIFA World Cup Organising Committee. He was later appointed as the CEO of the South African Football Association (Safa).

Sedibe made headlines recently after launching a R5m lawsuit against his former employers for defamation, according to a June 20 Sunday World report.

According to a Sport24 report, Sedibe is currently serving a five year ban [and was fined over R300 000] from all football-related events after allegedly fixing friendly Bafana Bafana games in 2010.

The ban was reportedly imposed on Sedibe in March 2016 after news broke that South Africa allegedly paid R10m to host the FIFA World Cup.

However, Sedibe accused Safa officials, including current CEO, Dennis Mumble, of tarnishing his name and reputation.
