Johannesburg - South Africa’s chicken importers believe that they and the cheap cuts they provide to a predominantly black and poor market are being given a raw deal.
They also believe that slapping the bone-in chicken quarters they bring into the country with the 37% tariff sought by the country’s chicken producers will simply push up prices and cost desperately needed jobs in the long term.
David Wolpert, CEO of the Association of Meat Importers and Exporters of SA (Amiesa), said its members bring in around 240 000 tons of bone-in chicken annually, around 14% of the total consumption nationally.
