Cape Town – Parliament's hearings on changing the Constitution to allow for land expropriation without compensation will take place in various areas, including mining towns, rural areas, four metros, and small towns with once-bustling economies.
This is according to a programme released by Parliament on Tuesday morning. Two teams of Parliamentarians have been assembled to undertake the tour, which is expected to take until August.
Team B will begin its hearings on Tuesday morning in the Northern Cape Province, where they will visit Nama Khoi Local Municipality. On Thursday they will visit Dawid Kruiper Local Municipality.
They will wrap up the Northern Cape's leg of the hearings by visiting Ga-Segonyana Local Municipality and Sol Plaatje Local Municipality on Friday and Saturday respectively.
Team B will visit the Free State's Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality, Matjhabeng Local Municipality and Maluti-A-Phofung Local Municipality between 2 and 4 July.
In KwaZulu Natal, between 18 and 21 July, Team B will visit Abaqulusi Local Municipality, Jozini Local Municipality, Msunduzi Local Municipality and Greater Kokstad Local Municipality.
Between 23 July and 28 July Team B will be in the Eastern Cape, visiting King Sabata Dalindyebo Local Municipality, Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality, Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality and Beyers Naude Local Municipality.
Team A’s hearings kick off in Ephraim Mogale Local Municipality of Limpopo Province on Wednesday. Team A will be in Limpopo from Wednesday (tomorrow) until Saturday.
On Thursday, the team will move on to Limpopo’s Mogalakwena Local Municipality.
On Friday the team will visit Greater Tzaneen Local Municipality.
On Saturday the team wrap up their Limpopo leg of the hearings by visiting Thulamela Local Municipality of the Vhembe District Municipality.
From Monday 2 July to Wednesday, the team will visit Mbombela Local Municipality, Msukaligwa Local Municipality and Steve Tshwete Local Municipality in Mpumalanga Province.
The team will take a one week break before continuing with North West Province.
From 17 July, they will visit Greater Taung Local Municipality, Mahikeng Local Municipality and Rustenburg Local Municipality.
In Gauteng, from 26 to 28 July, the team will visit Westonaria Local Municipality, which is known for its long history in mining, as well as Emfuleni Local Municipality and Frans Orange Street in Pretoria.
In the Western Cape, the team will visit Oudtshoorn and Beaufort West local municipalities as well as Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality. Those hearings will be from the 1 to 4 August.
Between 2 and 4 August, Team B will get to canvass the views of South Africans in Cederberg Local Municipality, Swellendam Local Municipality and Cape Town.
