While Eskom is not planning to implement rotational load shedding on Thursday, breakdowns at generating units remain stubbornly high.
In a morning power update, Eskom said that no power cuts were expected due to a drop in electricity demand over the holiday period and the return of some units to service.
But breakdowns are still well above the utility's goal of 9 500MW. Eskom said that at 07:30 on Thursday breakdowns were at 13 372MW, more than a quarter of the utility's nominal capacity.
It added that the system continues to be "vulnerable and unpredictable", and the the possibility of load shedding at short notice remains.
"We continue to ask customers to reduce demand as a concerted collective effort can help to avoid or lessen the level of load shedding," it said.
