Mining and quarrying contribute R13m to freight transport income

Johannesburg – At 3.7 points, mining and quarrying commodities have contributed the most to the overall freight transportation income for February 2018.

Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) this week released the results of the land survey, which shows the income changes in land transportation.

In the last three months mining and quarrying commodities contributed R13m to the overall freight transportation income.

Freight transportation income increased to 10.8% in February 2018. 

Economic activity also increase as the freight payload increased in February 2018 to 9.5%.

Contributing factors to the freight payload include “road freight which increased by 2.0% (contributing 1.5 percentage points) while rail freight increased by 1.1% (contributing 0.3 of a percentage point),” Stats SA said.  

The passenger transportation showed a negative growth rate. Passenger journeys and passenger income both decreased by 8.7% and 5.2% respectively.

However, passenger journeys for the last three months increased.

“Rail passenger journeys increased by 7.5% (contributing 3.4 percentage points) while road passenger journeys increased by 1.8% (contributing 1.0 percentage point),” Stats SA said.
