Lesetja Kganyago to be awarded honorary doctorate

Reserve Bank Governor Lesetja Kganyago will be awarded an honorary doctorate from Stellenbosch University this week.

According to a statement issued by the university on Friday, on its graduation ceremonies, the Reserve Bank head was named among three other individuals who will be awarded honorary doctorate degrees.

Kganyago will be awarded the degree Doctor of Commerce, on Monday December 10, at 17:30.

The other individuals who will receive honorary doctorates are Prof Homi Bhabha - the world's foremost postcolonial literary theorist from Harvard University in the US, Prof Dame Glynis Breakwell – the former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bath who made globally significant contributions to social psychology and Justice Zak Yacoob,a jurist in the fields of human rights and constitutional law.

Nelson Mandela, Thabo Mbeki, Bill Gates, Antjie Krog, Helen Suzman, Athol Fugard, Tito Mboweni, Naledi Pandor, David Kramer, Thuli Madonsela, Edwin Cameron and Mervyn King are among others who received honorary degrees from the university.     

Kganyago is also the chair of the International Monetary and Financial Committee. He was named the Central Banking’s Governor of the Year for 2018. At the time, his work in defending the independence of the Reserve Bank was recognised by the organisers of the award - Central Banking.
