Nene extends Kingon's term at SARS for another 90 days

Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene has extended Mark Kingon's term as acting commissioner of SARS for another 90 days.

National Treasury, in a statement, said Kingon was reappointed by the finance minister with effect from September 14. This is the second time Kingon's term has been extended

He took over the running of the revenue service from suspended commissioner Tom Moyane in March.

The state of the agency's corporate governance and the fact it has suffered from revenue shortfalls in the past two years is currently being investigated by the Nugent Commission of Inquiry.

The tax agency, meanwhile, is working to reestablish investigative units to tackle illicit trade in tobacco, fuel, textiles, and other good. The unit responsible for targeting illicit tobacco trade was disbanded under Moyane.

Speaking at the Tax Indaba last week, Kingon stressed the importance of improving tax revenue collection, so that the country can remain independent in setting out its developmental goals as opposed to relying on foreign aid. He also urged taxpayers to "join hands" with the agency, saying it was making an effort to improve its online e-filing experience.
