Jobs: Ramaphosa to receive progress report from Nedlac

President Cyril Ramaphosa will receive a report on the progress made on the implementation of resolutions reached at last year's job summit today.

The Presidency issued a statement indicating that the National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac) would deliver its report to Ramaphosa on Thursday. This as Stats SA announced this week that the country was facing its highest unemployment level in 11 years. Unemployment is presently at 29%.

The Presidential Jobs Summit was convened in October 2018 and involved input from various business groups, civil society and government to address the unemployment rate which was at 27.2% at the time.

The aim of the 2018 Summit was to explore mechanisms to ensure the economy grows and becomes more productive, and to upscale investment in the economy.

"The engagement among government, business, labour and community also set out to ensure that workers are better skilled and that the economic infrastructure is expanded," the Presidency said.

In its report Nedlac will document the progress and challenges that have been encountered since the summit. "Since the Jobs Summit, agreements and commitments made have been tabulated in six work plans which are being used to inform implementation and monitor progress made," the Presidency said.

Work plans, which will monitor progress of implementation, include interventions to prevent job losses, economic specific interventions, interventions for small, medium and micro enterprises, interventions for education and skills, inclusive growth and public and social interventions.
