Income from food and beverages decreases

Johannesburg - Measured in real terms - that is at constant 2012 prices - total income generated by the food and beverages industry decreased by 1.8% in August 2016 compared with August 2015, Statistics SA said on Monday.

The largest negative growth rates were recorded for "other" income (-9.4%) and bar sales (-8.8%).

Type of enterprise

In August 2016 negative annual growth rates were recorded for restaurants and coffee shops (-6.8%) and catering services (-3.1%).

Total income increased by 0.6% in the three months ended August 2016 compared with the three months ended August 2015. Takeaway and fast-food outlets grew by 6.1% and contributed 2.5 percentage points.
