Deputy minister of finance and the chair of the Public Investment Corporation Mondli Gungubele said on Wednesday that he welcomed a probe of the allegations against him contained in an email by a whistle-blower as he had done nothing wrong.
Earlier in the day the board of the state asset manager announced it would investigate "allegations of impropriety" against its acting chief executive officer and two non-executive directors.
The PIC did not name the two non-executive directors at the time. By releasing the statement, Gungubele confirmed that he was one of the non-executive directors.
“I have noted the decision by my fellow board members to investigate the allegations against me contained in an email circulated this week by a ‘whistle-blower’," said Gungubele in a statement issued by the Ministry of Finance on Wednesday afternoon. "I welcome the opportunity to clear this matter once and for all. However, I am confident that I have done nothing wrong.”
The PIC, meanwhile, said the decision to investigate the three board members was taken at a special meeting on Tuesday evening which was chaired by the Deputy Chairperson, Dr Xolani Mkhwanazi. The three members in question were recused.
"At the meeting, it was resolved to immediately conduct a forensic investigation into these allegations. The board will engage the services of an experienced senior counsel to assist the board with the said investigation," the board said in an earlier statement.
