Johannesburg - Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas has confirmed that he met with Public Protector Thuli Madonsela relating to her investigation into the wealthy Gupta family influencing high-level political appointments.
The public Protectors Office was asked to investigate the family following a public statement by Jonas that he was offered the post of finance minister by the Guptas. Former ANC member of Parliament Vytjie Mentor alleged that she too was offered a Cabinet post by the family.
Jonas said he met with Madonsela in an interview with 702 Talk Radio.
He also cautioned that the Hawk's probe into Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan is destabilising the government and creating uncertainty.
Gordhan declined last month to present himself to the Hawks' office for a statement linked to the inquiry into whether he had used a tax service unit to spy on politicians including President Jacob Zuma.
The rand has weakened around 3% since the news of the probe into Gordhan emerged.
"It does destabilise, not only Treasury, it creates uncertainties across the economy," said Jonas.
"We feel confident there is no basis for the allegation. We are not worried about that."
Zuma has said that the Guptas are his friends, but denied doing anything improper. The Guptas have also denied making job offers to anyone in government.
