Eskom to stop load shedding - for now

Eskom announced on Saturday that it would stop load shedding - for now.

In a statement, the power utility said that there will be "no load shedding tonight from 23:00".

"However, should the system continue to show further improvements, load shedding might stop earlier than 23:00," it said.

Eskom went on to say that there would be no load shedding on Sunday, even though the power system remained tight and vulnerable.

"We thank all South Africans for their patience and co-operation throughout the difficult period."

Tomorrow is the first time in more than a week that there will be no rotational power cuts.

Eskom introduced Stage 4 load shedding last week Saturday, following a cyclone in Mozambique which affected power imports from the country.

SA has been relying on open cycle gas turbines, which are powered by diesel, to meet energy demand when coal generating units are down.

Diesel levels were running low, but a diesel shipment of 13 million litres which arrived on Thursday helped ease the strain on the national grid.
