SARS is experiencing high volumes of taxpayers at its branches and has asked taxpayers to postpone their branch visits to Friday August 16, 2019.
The revenue service launched tax filing season on July 1. SARS also introduced several innovations to its digital channels to enhance the experience for taxpayers, Fin24 previously reported.
According to a tweet issued from its official account on Thursday afternoon, SARS said the high volumes of taxpayers at its branches was "adversely" impacting its systems.
SARS advised taxpayers to rather head to branches on Friday.
As of July 29, 2019, SARS had paid out R5.5bn in returns to taxpayers. The average turnaround for taxpayers that had not been selected for audits was seven days and the turnaround for those selected for audits was 21 days.
"To date, the response from South Africa has been great," SARS said in a previous statement issued on July 30, 2019.
Shortly after launching tax filing season the revenue service experienced technical glitches on its eFiling system with taxpayers having difficulties logging in and submitting supporting documents, among others.
"SARS takes these issues very seriously, and all efforts have been made to resolve them expeditiously and minimise the impact on compliant taxpayers who want to fulfil their filing obligations," the revenue service said.
