BLF: We'll redistribute land whether the Constitution is changed or not

The Constitution is unlikely to be changed, says Andile Mngxitama – but Black First Land First will redistribute land nonetheless.

Speaking at the Cape Chamber of Commerce & Industry's Rumble in the Urban Jungle at the Cape Sun on Tuesday evening, BLF leader Mngxitama said the movement was "organising themselves" to expropriate land without compensation.

"We shall simply lead a process of people-led land expropriation. We are already identifying farms and houses as well," he said.

'There will be a war'

"Let me give you the good news and the bad news," he told the audience.

"The bad news is there is going to be a war for land. Not just the physical sense of land, but for our [black people's] exclusion. How are you going to solve that?

"We are sufficiently angry, and I have seen enough people ready to do the ultimate sacrifice."

Explaining that he felt the Chamber of Commerce was a stronghold of white monopoly capital, he added: "The good news [for you] is that there is not going to be any expropriation without compensation.

"There is not going to be an amendment of the Constitution. White monopoly capital has done a good job of […] Cyril Ramaphosa," he said, citing the withdrawn Expropriation Bill.

'We do take houses'

"These guys are just using the expropriation discourse to get votes."

BLF was already identifying farms and homes for "people-led" expropriation instead, he said.

"So what about those of us who do want to expropriate you? We are not going to take your money your calls, we are organising ourselves," he told the audience.

"This process is difficult, but I don't think it can be easily stopped.

"We do take houses in white suburbs. Often when that happens they call the police but the police who arrive are black people. We start speaking in Xhosa, Zulu, Sepedi.

"We say, 'this house has been standing here for three years' and the police drive away. Then you must go to High Court. But by then we have already identified 20 other houses.

"You will not be able to buy off black legitimate rage."
