Zim jumps on township tourism bandwagon

Harare - Zimbabwe is set to copy South Africa’s township tourism concept, an official has said.

Addressing journalists and buyers at the Sanganai/Hlanganani travel expo which kicked off on Thursday, Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) CEO Karikoga Kaseke said the tourism body wants to follow the South African model in Soweto, where township tourism is booming.

“We want to copy what has been done in Soweto in a township suburb in Zimbabwe,” said Kaseke.

He said Highfield would be used as the location for the township tourism project because it has the same historical significance in Zimbabwe's struggle for independence as Soweto does in the South Africa struggle.

The ZTA will launch the township product in Highfield, one of Harare's oldest suburbs, on Saturday.

The properties due a facelift include houses used by President Robert Mugabe, the late vice-president Joshua Nkomo and former Zanu leader Herbert Chitepo.

Cabinet has already approved plans to spruce up the former homes of prominent pre-independence nationalists to promote the concept.
