Zim struggles in world rankings

Harare - The World Economic Forum (WEF) has said Zimbabwe’s policy environment is one of the least supportive in the world due to restrictive laws regarding foreign direct investment and property rights.

In its latest Global Competitiveness Report 2012-2013, the WEF ranked Zimbabwe’s policy environment at number 138 out of 140 countries saying the country has extremely poor assessments for laws related to foreign direct investment (FDI) and property rights.

Zimbabwe also ranked lowly at 118 in terms of attractiveness and competitiveness in travel and tourism.

A WEF report titled “The Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report 2013” showed Zimbabwe moved one place up from 119 in the previous year.

The WEF also indicated that Zimbabwe lagged behind as a result of the policy environment which continues to be least supportive of the travel and tourism industry.

Also highlighted were major concerns related to human resources, with low enrolment rates in primary and secondary education by international standards.

Zimbabwe also scored among the worst on health indicators with a ranking 134th in the world.
