Warning over fake R100 notes

Johannesburg - Police have urged businesses and the public to carefully check their bank notes following the arrest of two people involved in a counterfeit money scam.

A man and woman have been arrested for being in possession of counterfeit money with an estimated street value of R14 900 in Lanseria, Johannesburg, Gauteng police said.

"We are appealing to businesses and members of the public observe bank notes carefully when involved in cash transactions or receive cash from other persons," Warrant Officer Daniel Mavimbela said.

The 35-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman were arrested on Friday after police discovered counterfeit notes with an estimated street value of R900 during a stop and search routine, Mavimbela said.

"Further investigations led the police to a guest house in Malibongwe Road, north of Lanseria airport. On arrival, the police found a further amount of about fourteen thousand rands (R14 000), also made up of alleged fake one hundred rand notes."

More notes were found on A5 and A4 printouts.

Laptops, hard drives, ink and a printer were also recovered.

The two would appear in the Randburg Magistrate's Court soon on charges of production and possession of counterfeit money.
