UK gives Zim $72m to help rural farmers

2015-03-20 18:44

Harare - Britain has given Zimbabwe $72m to help increase food production by rural farmers over the next four years, as the country faces the prospect of poorer harvests this year due to inadequate rains.

Once the bread-basket of the region, Zimbabwe has since 2000 struggled to feed its people due to droughts and President Robert Mugabe's seizure of white-owned farms to resettle landless blacks, which badly affected commercial agriculture.

Catriona Laing, Britain's ambassador to Zimbabwe, said with 70% of Zimbabweans living in rural areas and mostly surviving on farming, supporting agriculture would speed up economic recovery.

The money would be paid out through the Food And Agriculture Organisation and other relief agencies.

Zimbabwe and Britain have had frosty ties since 2000, with London, the European Union and United States, accusing Mugabe of rigging elections and human rights abuses.

Mugabe denies the charges, saying Britain is leading the West in trying to remove him from power as punishment for the land seizures.

This is madness. When the UK withdrew from Zim they paid millions and millions of pounds every year for Mugabe to buy back farms from whites. Instead he pocketed the money and murdered the whites. Why they hell are they forking out more again? It's in Mugabe's bank account. If he doesn't care enough about his people then how can anyone else make any difference at all

Look, Zim is about to hit the wall. Hard. It will be a tragic humanitarian disaster if there's a serious famine. Zim is bankrupt. Mugabe is old and senile. Neither Grace nor ZANUPF can save Zim. The "Look East" policy was a gigantic failure, but even it is likely to be eclipsed in destructiveness by the disastrous indigenisation policy. So, Zim needs help. I'm glad if the West steps in. At least they care. Mugabe does not. Zimbabweans pay attention!

Britain gives Zimbabwe money while its own people are dying because they can't get the medical help needed, and its old people are in nursing homes not fit to house a pig. Politicians are mad.
