Johannesburg - Talks at the Road Freight Bargaining Council
continued into Thursday morning in an attempt to end the truck drivers' strike.
"The negotiations adjourned today (Thursday) at 1am and
will continue again at 1pm," Road Freight Employers' Association
spokesperson Magretia Brown-Engelbrecht said in a recorded message on her
cellphone.
She was not immediately available for further details.
SA Transport and Allied Workers' Union spokesperson Vincent
Masoga said unions and employers would consult separately among themselves
before returning to negotiations.
In parts of the country trucks had been pelted with stones
and set alight as the strike entered its second week. Pranksters sparked panic
by sending out messages claiming additional attacks and marches.
Drivers want a 12% salary increase while employers offered 8.5% for next year, and another 0.5% the following year.
