Super city planned for Cape Town

Cape Town - A self-sustaining mega-housing development is to be built in Cape Town in the next 10 to 15 years, it was reported on Friday.

The Cape Argus reported that the Wescape project was the city's biggest urban development project to date, and would be built between Melkbosstrand and Atlantis, about 32 kilometres north of central Cape Town.

The 3100 hectare development would eventually comprise 200 000 houses, 415 schools, 370 public service facilities and 15 sports complexes.

The population of the "mini-city" was expected to reach 800 000 by 2036.

Wescape was mainly focused on lower income groups - those earning between R4 000 and R6 000 a month.

According to the report, the R140bn development had been sent to the provincial environment and planning department for zoning approval.

This process would take at least two years. An environmental impact assessment was under way.
