Annual manufacturing production shows uptick in November - Stats SA

Jan 10 2019 13:36

South Africa's annual manufacturing production data showed a 1.6% year-on-year increase in November 2018, Stats SA reported on Thursday, with notable increases in the food and beverages, and motor vehicles sectors.

Seasonally adjusted production was up 0.7% in November when compared with October.

Stats SA said the 1.6% increase was caused by a 5.2% year-on-year growth in the food and beverages sector, and 6.2% annual growth in the motor vehicles, parts and accessories and other transport equipment sector.

Basic iron and steel, non-ferrous metal products, metal products and machinery division manufacturing production fell by 1.7% between November 2017 and November 2018.

Within the food and beverages sector, the beverages and the dairy subsectors showed the largest annual growth, with 9.4% and 7.8% increases respectively.

The manufacturing data was released the same day the SA Chamber of Commerce and Industry published its latest Business Confidence Index, which showed a marginal decline in confidence for the month of December.

The chamber said the index’s upward momentum in early 2018 had slowed and started to stagnate towards the end of 2018.
