2012-10-30 12:37

Johannesburg - South African has been ranked 74th out of 142 countries in the latest Legatum Prosperity Index‚ a unique global assessment of national prosperity based on wealth and wellbeing.

The countries best ranking was in the entrepreneur category where it was ranked 34th‚ with its worst ranking being 114 for health.

As the race for the White House reaches fever pitch‚ the latest findings from the index reveal that the American Dream is in jeopardy. In an unprecedented fall‚ the US dropped to 12th position in the worldwide prosperity rankings - with weakening performance across five of the index's eight sub-categories.

Meanwhile‚ Scandinavian countries prosper most‚ with Norway‚ Denmark and Sweden topping the overall index as first‚ second and third respectively. A new generation of Asian 'Tiger Cubs' has also emerged‚ with Vietnam‚ Thailand‚ Malaysia‚ and Indonesia all scaling the rankings.

In Europe‚ overall prosperity has increased‚ with Ireland‚ the Netherlands and Germany climbing the rankings (now eighth‚ tenth and 14th respectively). However‚ more than two thirds (24 out of 33) of European countries have seen their economy score decline since 2009.

    wow i am surprised that were not ranked 142 given that were lead by a bunch of illiterates and that our president has less education than most of the populace in Zimbabwe......

    education = prosperity

      Actually not all true. IQ in the bigger picture is the real thing that determines prosperity. Read "The Bell Curve" and you will see why.

    Oh please and please how can you rank a country that has people who spend a week without food and water so high? Rank the people not the stash of money that is underneath politician's beds.

    What a load of rot. Go and have a look at the website http://www.prosperity.com/ How on earth is Ireland, Spain and Portugal's economy ranked better than ours? This is so farcical! Ireland's governance gets a ranking of 14th? - after all the financial bailouts. I think they should include a ranking for weather/climate too. I also think our healthcare system, although in a shambles in many corners, is not 114th in the world. Loads of people from the UK and NZ still come to SA for major healthcare issues - the HIV figure is probably responsible for this.
