Johannesburg -Transnet National Ports Authority CEO Tau Morwe says South Africa and Mozambique have signed a memorandum of understanding, which will result in their ports collaborating in business.
He said: "The memorandum opens up collaboration on matters of common interest in areas of infrastructure development, engineering, training and marine services."
The memorandum was signed between the TNPA and the Maputo Ports Development Company (MPDC).
Morwe said the countries were not competitors and the agreement would create a closer working relationship.
MPDC CEO Osorio Lucas said the agreement was an important step for regional business growth.
"It is an important step toward fostering greater intra-regional co-operation, which is a key priority of the Southern African Development Community and the Common Market of Eastern and Southern Africa."
Morwe hoped intra-regional trade would reach the same level as that in Asia and Europe.
