Ramaphosa: Door open for private coal-fired plant

Cape Town - The government's door is open to the private sector providing a coal-fired power station to provide much-needed electricity in South Africa, Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa told MPs today.

Noting that "there is light at the end of the tunnel" to solve Eskom's ongoing electricity provision problems, he said that independent power producers were already feeding 800MW into the grid through short term cogeneration contracts.

But he said "requests for proposals" were being put to the private sector "for a new coal-fired power station". It was envisaged that this coal-fired plant would provide 2 500MW.

Ramaphosa was replying to a question from Inkatha Freedom Party MP Narend Singh.
