Pravin: Taxpayers weary of misuse of funds

Cape Town - Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan has warned that taxpayers are getting weary of the misuse of public funds‚ but also pointed a finger at how the private sector costs its products and services to government.

Speaking in the National Assembly during the debate on the appropriations bills on Tuesday‚ Gordhan said: “We must remember this is taxpayers’ money. The taxpayer is becoming impatient that we (government) are not providing value for money.”

Gordhan appeared to be referring to the auditor general’s report of last year that stated the public service had reported fruitless and wasteful expenditure of R30bn.

However‚ Gordhan then turned his attention to the private sector describing it as the second side of the coin, and saying that a higher level of integrity was needed in the way it tendered for government business.

“There is ample evidence that there is two sides to every story‚” Gordhan said.
