PPI increases to 3.1% in March

Cape Town – South Africa's annual producer price inflation increased to 3.1% year-on-year in March, from 2.6% in February. On a month-on-month basis PPI increased by 1.8%.

Statistics SA said on Thursday the main contributor to the increase was food products, beverages and tobacco products (6% y/y and contributing 2 percentage points).

The main contributor to the monthly increase of 1.8% was coke, petroleum, chemical, rubber and plastic products.

The annual percentage change for in the producer price inflation for electricity and water was 8.6% in March from 8.2% in February.
Electricity contributed 7.5 percentage points to the increase, with water contributing 1.1 percentage points.

For mining the annual percentage change in the PPI was -4.4%; for agriculture, forestry and fishing -1.0% and for intermediate manufactured goods 0.9%.
