New code for labour inspectors

Cape Town - The labour department has drafted a code of conduct for labour inspectors aimed at rooting out malpractice in the profession, Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant said on Friday,

"The commitment to the values in the code will ensure the labour inspectorate operates in a transparent and accountable manner," Oliphant said in East London.

Oliphant said the department enlisted the help of the International Labour Organisation in drafting the code to strengthen the department's capacity for proper enforcement.

Deputy director general of labour for inspection Siyanda Nxawe said the code would be made public "soon" but would first be tabled in the department's internal bargaining chamber, which included trade unions like the Public Servants' Association and the National Education, Health and Allied Workers' Union.

"The code will also determine what steps the department will take against those who do not comply," she told Sapa.
