NUM warns of fake SMS messages

Johannesburg - Bogus cellphone messages are circulating claiming that the striking National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has reached an agreement with construction sector employers, the union said on Wednesday.

The SMSes were also instructing workers to report for duty on Thursday, said NUM spokesperson Lesiba Seshoka.

"The NUM has entered into no agreement with the employer companies represented by the SA Federation of Civil Engineering Contractors (Safcec)," he said in a statement.

"The union rejects with contempt the ill-conceived manoeuvres by the construction companies to get workers back at work by hook or crook."

The NUM and the Building, Construction and Allied Workers' Union (BCAWU) went on strike on August 26.

They were demanding a minimum salary structure, a 13% wage increase for 2013, and a 14% increase for 2014.

On Tuesday, BCAWU accepted a 10 percent wage offer from Safcec, but the NUM said it was sticking to its demands.

"It is the BCAWU that has entered into such a useless agreement with the employers," said Seshoka.

"The NUM appeals to its members not to go to work tomorrow and to continue with the... strike action until employers accede to the demands of construction workers," he said.
