N1 toll gates had happy Easter

Cape Town - Four toll gates on the N1 highway between Pretoria and Polokwane raked in more than R15m over the Easter long weekend, Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele disclosed on Wednesday.

In a written reply to a parliamentary question, he said the net revenue received by the SA National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) from the Carousel, Pumulani, Kranskop and Nyl "mainline plazas" amounted to R15.5m.

This was for the period April 5 to April 10.

The toll gates are operated by concessionaire Bakwena.

According to the minister's reply, the best day was April 5, when R4.1m was taken in tolls. The second-best day was Easter Sunday (April 9), when net toll revenue amounted to R3.5m.

Over R6m of the total for the period was taken at the Carousel toll plaza.
