Municipal workers threaten mass strike

Johannesburg - Samwu members will embark on a national strike if negotiations with the SA Local Government Association (Salga) fail, the union said on Tuesday.

The SA Municipal Workers' Union (Samwu) said it was entering into a negotiation process with Salga on Tuesday to break a deadlock.

"We are hopeful that, in the next three days,... Salga will display appropriate amounts of commitment to avert a national strike action in the sector and resolve the current disputes in the local government sector," it said in a statement.

Salga could not be reached for comment.

The negotiations related to the main collective agreement, the disciplinary code, an increase in the home owners' allowance and bringing municipal-owned entities under the scope of the SA Local Government Bargaining Council.

"Due to the employer's arrogance and lack of commitment, Samwu has already decided to embark on national strike action to force the employer's hand," the union said.

"Should this last ditch attempt fail to get Salga to negotiate in good faith, after many years of Salga showing a complete disregard to workers in the sector, we will meet in the streets in strike action," it said.
